- Maneuver through a series of obstacles
- Traverse the hoops!
- 1 foot per hoop
- Time limit: 3 minutes
- 2 foot hoops
- Rational: The In-N-Out challenge is there to make us appreciate the difficulty of controlling and guiding an ROV. Navigating threw the different hoops will simulate navigating the different obstacles that scientists face while in the ocean.
Fish ID
- Perform a survey (count and ID) of marine organisms along a transect
- Use data sheet to record the types of animals and the quantity along a given transect
- Time limit: TBD
- Rationale: This obstacle will help us understand how ROVs are useful to marine scientists in identifying different species that live in an ecosystem and making observations about the environment.
Gone Fishin'
- Collect marine organisms from the benthic environment
- Time limit: TBD
- Octopus weight: 57.63 grams
- Rational: This challenge is meant to simulate the collection of animals and how ROVs can pick up objects. Scientists would do this in the real world to study animals and gain valuable information about diffrent organisms.
Operation Fix-It
- Plug a busted pipe from an oil rig
- Pick up the oil well-cap
- Place cap completely on leaking oil cap
- Time limit: TBD
- Oil cap weight: 51.48 grams
- Oil cap diameter: 16 inches
- Rationale: This obstacle will help us understand the environmental uses for ROVs as we use this ROV to help stop a mock oil spill. Likewise, it will help us understand the environmental destruction that man-made disasters can cause and why we should all be environmentally responsible.
